Why "One Cleaning Fits All" Doesn't Work and What We Do Differently

If you've been to more than one dentist in your life, you've probably noticed that a routine cleaning feels pretty much the same everywhere: a hygienist scrapes, polishes, and sends you on your way for another six months. That approach works fine — until it doesn't. Gum disease doesn't progress the same way for everyone, and treating every patient with the same routine cleaning means some people get more care than they need, while others don't get enough.
At Orange Blossom Dental, we've moved away from that one-size-fits-all model. Our therapeutic hygiene program starts with a full assessment of your gum health, not an assumption, so the care you receive actually matches what's going on in your mouth.
A Hygiene Visit That Starts With a Diagnosis
Every visit begins with a real evaluation — checking for inflammation, bleeding, pocket depth, and early warning signs that a standard cleaning might miss. From there, we recommend the level of care that fits your current needs, which might look very different from the cleaning you got at your last appointment, or from what the person in the next chair is getting.
That might mean:
- Preventative cleaning for patients with healthy gums who just need to stay that way.
- Gingivitis treatment to calm early inflammation before it turns into something more serious.
- Periodontal maintenance for patients managing gum disease long-term.
- Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) for bacteria that's settled in below the gumline.
- Implant-specific cleaning and maintenance to protect the investment of a dental implant and the tissue around it.

The goal isn't to upsell more treatment — it's to make sure you're getting exactly the right amount, at the right time, before small issues become expensive ones.
Adding Laser Therapy to the Mix
One of the bigger upgrades to our hygiene program has been incorporating laser-assisted therapy alongside traditional cleanings. It's not a replacement for good hygiene fundamentals — it's a tool that makes the care we're already providing more effective and a lot more comfortable.
A few ways it helps:
- No drilling sounds or vibration, which makes the whole experience noticeably calmer for patients who dread the dentist.
- Less invasive than surgical approaches to gum disease.
- Reduces harmful bacteria that contribute to inflammation and infection.
- Supports faster healing, so you're not dealing with lingering soreness.
- Makes the rest of your treatment plan more effective, rather than working against it.
In practice, we use laser therapy two ways. For patients coming in for a routine preventative visit, we can add a quick, painless laser bacterial reduction step to cut down on harmful bacteria in the mouth overall. For patients undergoing a deeper cleaning, we use laser decontamination to disinfect below the gumline during the procedure itself — reducing bacteria right where the problem is and giving your gums a better shot at healing well.
What This Looks Like for You
In short: your hygiene visit isn't generic. It's built around an actual assessment of your mouth, adjusted as your needs change over time, and — when it helps — supported by laser technology that makes treatment gentler and more effective.
If it's been a while since your last cleaning, or you've noticed bleeding, sensitivity, or other changes in your gums, that's exactly the kind of thing a personalized hygiene assessment is meant to catch early.
